Expert Urology Care, Right Here on Maui

Dr. Soren Carlsen has cared for Maui's urology patients since 2016, and in 2018 founded Maui Urology — Maui's only independent, physician-owned urology practice. Together with Lindsay Leggett, PA-C, we provide a full range of urologic care — from routine concerns to advanced office procedures and major surgery — without leaving the island.

Why Patients Choose Maui Urology

Depth of experience. Dr. Carlsen has practiced urology since 2009 and has served Maui since 2016, successfully treating thousands of local residents and visitors. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology.

Breadth of training. Dr. Carlsen is trained across the full spectrum of urology — minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery, urologic oncology, kidney stones, female urology including incontinence and prolapse repair, reconstructive surgery, general pediatric urology, neurourology and men's health.

Advanced procedures, done in the office. Many treatments that once required a hospital and general anesthesia can now be done comfortably in our Wailuku office under local anesthesia — meaning less risk, less cost, and a faster return to your life.

Independent and local. As Maui's only independent, physician-owned urology practice, we answer to our patients — not to a hospital system or HMO. We accept most major insurance plans, and you don't need to be a member of any health plan network to be seen here.

No hospital facility fees. Because our office is not owned by a hospital system, your visits and office procedures here are billed as exactly what they are — a visit to your doctor. There's no separate "facility fee" added on top, the way there often is when a practice is part of a hospital's outpatient department.

What's a Facility Fee? (And Why You Won't Get One From Our Office)

When a medical practice is owned by a hospital or health system, that visit can be billed as "hospital outpatient" care — which means two charges: one for the doctor, and a second facility fee for the hospital, even though you never set foot in the hospital. Facility fees often come as a surprise, and depending on your plan they can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars toward your deductible or coinsurance for every routine appointment or minor procedure.

.

Maui Urology is independently owned. Office visits and office-based procedures here — consultations, vasectomies, cystoscopy, UroLift, Botox, and more — are billed as physician services only. No facility fee, no second bill from a hospital.

(When a procedure is best performed at a surgery center or hospital, those facilities bill their own fees — but we do everything we safely can right here in the office, under local anesthesia, which is usually the lowest-cost and lowest-risk option for you.)
